Hello Colorado Math Leaders!
Thank you for joining the September 1, 2026 CML meeting. We had 50 attendees for our first gathering of the year, and we appreciate the thoughtful discussion and continued collaboration across our statewide math leadership community.
If you were in attendance, we would appreciate your feedback on this brief survey (estimated time: 2 minutes). Below is a brief recap.
The grounding took place in small breakout room groups of 4-5, where participants introduced themselves and shared bright spots from last year and challenges for this year.
Guest speaker and current NCSM President Brian Buckhalter presented an overview of the resources that NCSM has to offer, including publications, virtual live and asynchronous professional learning, affiliates, and the national conference. Participants used a note-catcher document and planned next steps related to NCSM’s resources. Brian's slides and note-catcher are linked in the agenda.
Updates were provided from CCTM, NCSM, CDE, the HS Pathways Collective, and CML. You can review full details in the agenda below.
During the final 30 minutes of the meeting, a group of ~12 people stayed on and helped brainstorm around specific challenges CML members brought up for support:
- The group generated ideas for questions to engage superintendents who have identified the need to focus on math
- The group shared ideas on engaging and communicating with schools in smaller or rural districts
The next meeting will be held on October 6, 2026 with guest speaker Dr. Sandra Lightman, a leader in education change management. Her session will introduce math leaders to a grounded approach to leading instructional change. Participants will learn to:
- understand where teachers are in the change process
- respond to predictable concerns
- create conditions that help new math practices take root
- grow practical leadership moves that build trust, clarity, and momentum.
The last 30 minutes of the meeting will again be reserved for Special Interest Group/open conversations.
